How names are written in Korean
Korean doesn't adopt foreign spellings — it rewrites the soundof your name in Hangul, following the National Institute of Korean Language's loanword rules. That's why Michael becomes 마이클 (ma-i-keul) rather than a letter-by-letter copy: Hangul is a phonetic alphabet, so your Korean name is really a recording of how it sounds.
A few sounds don't exist in Korean — there is no true f, v, z or th — so f becomes ㅍ (p), v becomes ㅂ (b) and th usually becomes ㅅ (s). Fiona → 피오나, Kevin → 케빈, Thomas → 토머스.
